Some more articles.

Teachers find blogs motivate young writers AND Teachers are reaching out to students with a new class of blogs
I think that blogs like:
http://www.edublogs.org/ and http://www.classblogmeister.com/
are good and safe sites that are geared towards education. I like the idea that there are sites like these that are monitored for content. I also like the fact that people are taking objects, like blogging and how many times it can have inappropriate materials. , and turning them from a negative source into a positive source.

A Day in the Life of Web 2.0
I think that it is a good idea to eliminate the textbooks but I also think that it could cause some issues in the classroom. Haven’t we all dealt with computer glitches, could you imagine what would happen if this took place in your classroom to several students. I really am all for less textbooks, but I think that we need to know what we could be getting into first. I like the idea of adding more videos into a lesson, I am personally a visual learner and so are many other students.

What I liked and learned.

Three things that have been valuable pieces of knowledge in this class are open source resources, podcasting in the classroom, and educational blogging. I never knew that there was free, legal and useful software out there and how beneficial it can be. I am personally using GIMPshop (much like Photoshop) and I really like it. I also never really understood how to use and how beneficial it could be to use podcasting and blogging in the classroom. I learned that blogging can be used for more things than just a daily diary. I like the idea of using podcasting to communicate with other schools throughout the world, I think that this could very helpful for my future students.

Edutopia Blog.

Harrison Central High School
http://www.edutopia.org/node/2947

This video was about making the classroom more interactive. Data and information was shared by many of the classrooms. They used technology to connect school subject to real world situations. I like this idea because there is nothing more frustrating than having to learn something that you will never use or something that has no relevance to your life.

Mary Scroggs Elementary School
http://www.edutopia.org/node/2961

This video stated that grade levels as low ad kindergarten were using websites and laptops to complete tasks successfully. Many classes use the kidspiration and inspiration software to organize data. I liked the fact that computers were donated to lower income families. I am also amazed that they start pushing technology at such a young age, but you have to start somewhere and their futures are going to be surrounded by technology.

A Product of Learning
http://www.edutopia.org/node/2958
I am amazed that this school got as much accomplished as it did due to the 28 languages that were spoken. I like the idea of getting everyone in a school involved in a project. I think that more schools should be like this; less division between each school room and more interaction.

Leading with Laptops
http://www.edutopia.org/node/2960

I like the question “How do you make laptops more than just a $2000 pencil?” I was “WOWED” by the statement that teachers saw that they had to talk less and the students explored and discovered more with integration of technology.

No Gamer Left Behind
http://www.edutopia.org/no-gamer-left-behind
I feel that schools should invest in more educational games. I like the idea that teacher could expose their students to ares that they couldn’t without these games, example: determining and interacting with bacteria. I also like the idea that games can connect the students to the world more so than text or tests.

Key Largo School
http://www.edutopia.org/key-largo-school

I really think that more schools should be ran like the Key Largo school. The classroom is tailored to individual needs. Also I like that teachers are encouraged to take risks. I think that many teachers play it safe and stick to what they feel comfortable with rather than explore and experiment.

The Geo Literacy Project
http://www.edutopia.org/geo-literacy-project
I really like the idea of students, especially younger students, interacting with other grade levels as well as their communities. This video also should me that good things can happen if you allow your students to have a majority of the control over what they learn and how they do it.

Innovative Technologies to Improve Teaching and Learning

ALTEC: Innovative Technologies to Improve Teaching and Learning:
http://altec.org/index.php

I know that this site will be very useful. I would definitely use the Project based checklist, QuizStar, and TrackStar in my classroom. I feel that these are good programs that could help save me important time. I am always making checklists for projects and I am sure that my future students will find the checklists very handy. I also like the Web Worksheet Wizard feature. I would use this feature to create a classroom website and post images of the artwork that was made by my students. I shared this site with Ms. Ray and she was very excited and wanted to try to make her own website as well. She also liked the fact that there was a section that makes quizzes in no time.

Apple Learning Interchange.

Apple Learning Interchange
I like this site because I can share and communicate with other teacher who have subscribed to it. I also like the fact that it is educational based and you don’t end up with useless or inappropriate material. I was amazed by some of the facts that I found in the conversation section titled Creativity, Technology & the Arts...

Did you know?

A recent study by Americans for the arts and NSBA reports that young people who consistantly participate in comprehensive, sequential, and rigorous arts programs are:*4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.*4 times more likely to participate in math and science fairs*4 times more likely to win an award or writing an essay or poem*3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance*3 times more likely to be elected to class office.

I also like this site because it has helpful videos.
I shared this site with another teacher, Ms. Ray. She felt that it could be helpful to her class and she said she would have to signup!

First set of articles.

U.S. schools lag behind in use of technology
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-01-07-schools-lag-in-tech_x.htm
My “WOW” moment for this article was when I learned that the largest group of new internet users is 2-5 year olds. I found this amazing; it seems awfully young to me. I guess that it is better to get them familiar with technology at an early age that way they don’t feel uncomfortable using it later on.

Students Using Technology To Achieve Reading – Writing (STAR-W)
http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/os/technology/plan/2004/site/edlite-default.html
I found that there is a system called SchoolNet that allows teachers to monitor and review testing and student’s performance all in one spot. I learned that through the use of this system there have been enhancements in the product and more unity between the professional communities. I like that fact that this system has the ability to help solve issues with students and faculty alike.

National Educational Technology Standards for Students: The Next Generation
http://cnets.iste.org/
This site had an abundance of information regarding the national standards for technology in preK-12 classes. Since technology has become a part of everyday life, I feel that it is important to have standards like these in place. Each of these standards should be reached by every class to ensure that the students will have success with technology in the future.

Adopt and Adapt
http://www.edutopia.org/adopt-and-adapt
This article was an eye-opener. I had never realized the steps that school systems went through. I really liked the idea that Angus King stated, “I suggest that every lesson plan, every class, every school, every school district, and every state ought to try something new and report to all of us what works and what doesn’t; after all, we do have the internet.” I feel that communication between students, teachers and communities throughout the world could help school systems become a more enhanced and better prepared for the integration of new technologies.
